One Entry we received for entry for the Edward White $5000 History Prize was from reader, John, who wrote:
It is possible that one source of ID for Edward White has been missed.
Many Irish involved in the Wexford rebellion of 1798 were taken by the Irish authorities and tried for rebellion. Some young boys one Edward White was gaoled and at his trial committed to military service overseas.
Better than handing a 14 yearold This White became a trumpeter in the 18th Irish Light Dragoons overseas and later was transferred to the 3rd Buffs Regiment in Australia as he his sentence meant he could not return to Ireland.
He would have learnt all about Risdon 1803 from british soldiers in the 3rd who had been in the previous regiments in Australia 102/73/46/48 but stayed on in Australia.
This aspect re the ID of White should be researched.
John supplied this file of notes
