Kyam Maher - Is He a Case of What a Tangled Web We Weave...?

Politics is an ever-shifting landscape in South Australia, with politicians appearing to slog away for a decade, working their way to the top, only to disappear a short time later due to election losses, stress, family pressures, illness or factional brawls.

On 18 Sept 2025 two senior ministers in South Australia’s Labor Malinauskas government independently decided to resign after ten years of service:

These resignations forced the premier Peter Malinauskas into a hasty cabinet reshuffle in which another politician, who has been slogging away for the past 10 years, took one more step up in his rise on South Australia’s political ladder, the current Attorney-general The Hon Kyam Maher.

Kyam Maher newly identified as Aboriginal when he entered parliament in 2012, later rising to become, as he claims, “South Australia’s first Aboriginal Attorney-general”. He is now enjoying a “proud moment to be appointed the first Aboriginal Deputy Premier in SA.”

Unfortunately, research by the Dark Emu Exposed website indicates that the Honourable Member is mistaken to believe that he is of Aboriginal descent - the genealogical records indicate that all his ancestors appear to originally have come from Ireland, England or Germany. No ancestors who were of Aboriginal descent could be found.

If the sands of South Australian politics keep shifting and Premier Malinauskas moves on, will his deputy, Kyam Maher become not only South Australia’s, but also Australia’s, first Aboriginal Premier?

Interesting times for Labor’s spin-doctors
